Do I have to refinish a piece of wood that I burn a design into when it's previously finished
l bought a beautiful Cherry wood valet for my boyfriend. It is completely
finished. l wanna burn some Celtic designs into it to make it more
personal. Do l have to refinish it after the burning, or will it be fine
without?
Also what would be a good finish to use for cherry wood?

Just wipe off the charred pieces and put a coat of poly over it
the same sheen as the original.
you are damaging the finish when you burn it. fire does what
fire does.
if its a inside thing
NO
obviously, you would be burning thru the existing finish to
create your designs. you will want to lightly sand with extra fine
sandpaper or steel wool, then refinish with the same type of finish that
is already there.
if you don't want to refinish, try a small design in a hidden location, or
on the part that would be covered by something, and see how it looks.
